How to Find the Keywords Your Competitor Ranks For (That You Don't)
TL;DR: A keyword gap analysis compares your domain to a competitor's and lists the keywords where they rank and you don't. It's the fastest honest answer to "what content should we make next?" Run one in the keyword gap tool — 12 credits per fresh lookup.
What a keyword gap actually tells you
Not every gap keyword is worth chasing. The value is in the sorting: gaps where the competitor ranks outside the top 3 with modest authority are winnable; gaps where they hold position 1 with a decade-old page usually aren't. You're shopping for the flanks, not the fortresses.
One of the best-documented examples in our library: a small e-commerce brand grew from $3.3K to $40.6K monthly organic revenue by deliberately avoiding the market leader's fortress keywords and winning the questions upstream of purchase instead.
Step 1 — run the comparison
Open the keyword gap tool, enter your domain and one competitor, and run it. You'll get the intersection report: keywords they rank for, their positions, volumes, and where you stand.

Step 2 — filter for winnable intent
Work the list with two questions:
- Is there buying intent? "best invoicing software for freelancers" beats "what is an invoice" every time, even at a tenth of the volume.
- Is their position soft? Competitor at position 5–15 = a page that ranks on domain strength, not excellence. That's your opening.
Step 3 — one page per gap, better than theirs
For each keyword you pick: read the competitor's ranking page, then publish something specifically better — more current data, clearer answer, real examples. Internal-link it to your money pages.
Step 4 — re-run monthly
Gap analysis is a moving picture. A monthly re-run (cached repeats are free) shows which gaps you've closed and which new ones opened.
Frequently asked questions
How many competitors should I compare against?
Start with one true competitor — same buyer, similar size. Comparing against giants mostly returns fortress keywords you can't win yet.
What if I don't know who my SEO competitor is?
Run the Competitors tool first — it lists the domains that share the most ranked keywords with yours, which is often different from who you think of as competition.
How much does it cost?
12 credits per fresh lookup. The free plan includes 20 credits/month; Lite ($19/mo) includes 500.
