How to Rank in AI Overviews: What Google Actually Says
TL;DR: Google says you don't need special optimization to appear in AI Overviews, and that normal SEO fundamentals still apply. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Meeting those requirements doesn't guarantee it will appear.
What the data adds
Ahrefs reports that 76% of URLs cited in AI Overviews came from Google's top 10 for the query. So ranking well and appearing in AI Overviews are closely linked, which fits Google's advice.
What to skip
Google's AI optimization guide says tactics such as chunking content, creating llms.txt files and seeking inauthentic mentions can be ignored for Google Search. Be wary of anyone selling them as a shortcut.
What to do
- Check the basics. Confirm the page is indexed and can show a snippet. Google's guide also covers Search Console settings for generative AI features, so review it for your site.
- See who is cited. Use the AI Overview citations tool, and the SERP tool to see whether a search shows an AI Overview.
- Improve the page. Compare yours with the cited sources and add what's missing: clearer answers, firsthand detail or better evidence.
- Measure. Google has begun rolling out generative AI reports in Search Console, starting with a subset of sites.
