AI Visibility: How to Check and Improve It (2026 Guide)

TL;DR: AI visibility is whether AI assistants mention your brand or cite your website when people ask relevant questions. Check it with real customer questions, work out why you're missing, then improve your pages and your presence on the sources those answers already use. Nobody can guarantee a citation.

Mentions and citations are different

  • A mention means the answer names your brand.
  • A citation means the answer uses your website as a source.

You can have one without the other, so check both. The combination tells you what to do next.

Result What it suggests Where to focus
Mentioned and cited You're visible for this question Keep the page accurate and re-check
Mentioned, not cited Assistants know you, but rely on other sources Make your own page clearer and more useful
Cited, not mentioned Your content is used, but your brand isn't credited Make the brand and what it does clear on the page
Neither You're absent for this question Study the cited sources and earn coverage on them

These are starting points rather than diagnoses, because one answer can't prove why an assistant did something.

Step 1: build a list of real questions

Assistants answer questions, not keywords, so write down what customers actually ask. Sales calls, support emails and reviews are good sources.

Cover a few types:

  • Best-of questions: "best CRM for a small agency"
  • Comparisons: "Brand A or Brand B for freelancers"
  • Problem questions: "how do I stop no-shows at a dental clinic"
  • Local questions: "best physiotherapist in Dubai Marina"

Start with around ten that matter commercially. Include your category without your brand name, because that's how a new customer would ask.

Step 2: check where you stand

Run those questions through the free AI visibility checker, which asks ChatGPT and Perplexity live. Our step-by-step tutorial shows how to read the result. For Google, the AI Overview citations tool shows which sources are cited for a search.

Answers change between runs, so one result is a snapshot. Record the date, the question and who appeared, then repeat the same questions later.

Step 3: understand what is being cited

In our study of hotel brands, 34 of 61 major brands never appeared in 40 answers, and travel media was cited far more than booking sites. Even Wyndham, the largest hotel company by property count, didn't appear. That is one category on one day, but it shows size alone doesn't secure a place in an answer.

Do the same for your market: list every cited domain, then sort them.

  • Your own site: is it cited, and which page?
  • Competitors: which of their pages are used?
  • Media and review sites: could you be covered or listed there?
  • Communities: are real discussions shaping the answer?

Step 4: improve what you control

  • Keep pages reachable. Make sure you aren't blocking search crawlers by accident.
  • Say plainly what you do. State who you serve, where you operate and what you offer.
  • Answer the question directly, then back it up with specifics.
  • Add evidence only you have, such as your own data, pricing and examples.
  • Keep facts current, and make them consistent wherever your business is listed.

Our ChatGPT and Perplexity guide and AI Overviews guide go through each platform. The GEO playbook gives a fuller process.

Step 5: earn a place on trusted sources

If answers rely on third-party sites, focus there. Real press coverage, accurate directory listings, genuine reviews and useful community contributions all help people as well as assistants. Avoid fake reviews and manufactured mentions: Google's guidance names seeking inauthentic mentions as something to ignore.

Step 6: measure what you can

  • Repeat your question list on a regular schedule and compare results.
  • Watch referrals from AI assistants in your analytics, although some visits won't be labelled clearly.
  • Check Search Console. Google has started rolling out generative AI reports, beginning with a subset of sites.

Common mistakes

  • Testing only your brand name, which says little about whether new customers will find you.
  • Judging from a single run.
  • Buying tricks such as special files or formatting that Google says it doesn't need.
  • Dropping SEO. AI Overviews draw heavily on pages already ranking in Google, according to Ahrefs.

What the terminology means

Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) both describe working toward visibility in AI answers. Google's own guidance treats this as a continuation of good SEO, so don't drop the fundamentals for a new label.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

There is no reliable timeline. Answers can change quickly, but coverage on trusted sources takes time to earn. Set a baseline and re-check rather than expecting a fixed date.

How many questions should I check?

Around ten is a practical start, as long as they reflect what customers really ask. You can add more once you know which ones matter.

Can I guarantee my brand appears in AI answers?

No. Nobody controls what assistants say, and answers change between runs. You can only improve the odds and check the result.

Which assistants does WWO check?

The free checker covers ChatGPT and Perplexity. A separate tool on paid plans covers sources cited in Google AI Overviews. WWO doesn't check Claude or Gemini.
